American Association of School Librarians (AASL), Letter from the President

It is with great pleasure that the 19th edition of the University Press Books for Public and Secondary School Libraries is presented. This new edition is the culmination of the hard work and dedication of American Association of School Libraries (AASL)’s American University Presses Book Selection Committee to the school library community. Since 1967, AASL and the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) have worked in partnership to give school library media specialists an invaluable resource for their collection development.

As noted in the Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Media Program: An Interpretation of the Library Bill of Right, “The school library media program plays a unique role in promoting intellectual freedom. It serves as a point of voluntary access to information and ideas and as a learning laboratory for students as they acquire critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed in a pluralistic society.”

Both AASL and AAUP serve and support the school library community and promote intellectual freedom in their missions. AASL supports these values through its mission to advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field. AAUP serves the profession by preserving the distinctiveness of local cultures through the publication of works on states and regions where they are based.

Please use this valuable resource offered to you through AAUP to develop a collection that will encourage students to learn for the rest of their lives and seek out information. Again, thank you to AAUP and the AASL American University Press Book Selection Committee.
