Membership Programs Job List News Desk Resources Home

In order to extend the advantages of AAUP participation to the broadest possible range of scholarly publishers, there are four classes of membership: full, affiliate, associate, and international. The various categories, detailed below, allow the very small university press, the overseas press, and the not-for-profit publishing wings of scholarly associations and institutions to enjoy many of the benefits available to traditional university presses. Members must be not-for-profit, and all members are expected to maintain a high standard of scholarship and integrity in the materials they publish.

A summary of membership requirements is listed below. A brief introduction to the programs and services offered to AAUP members is available by clicking here.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Candidates for full, affiliate, or international membership may apply by submitting a completed application form, along with the supporting materials specified on that form, to the AAUP Central Office. The information will then be forwarded to the Admissions and Standards Committee for their review.

Applications for associate membership may be made only at the invitation of the Board of Directors. Interested presses must begin the application process by writing to the Executive Director or Membership Manager at the AAUP Central Office, enclosing a copy of a recent catalog and information as to the press's editorial policy and goals. Once an invitation has been issued, the procedures for the applying press are the same as those for other categories of membership.

To qualify for admission, all full, international, and associate applications must be approved by the AAUP Committee on Admissions and Standards, the AAUP Board of Directors, and by a membership vote.

FULL MEMBERSHIP
A university press is defined as the publishing arm of a university or college, or a group of such institutions. To qualify for full membership, a press must publish five or more scholarly books a year. "Scholarly" refers to works of original research. Presses are eligible to apply for full membership if they have published 10 or more scholarly titles in the preceding two years.

The press must have a committee or board of the faculty that certifies the scholarly quality of the books published through peer review.

The press must have at least three full-time equivalent employees, including a director. The director is not required to work at the press full time. The director should report to the president of the university, or someone at the vice-presidential or decanal level (i.e., someone reporting either to the President or to the chief academic officer) having both fiscal and academic authority.

Full members are granted voting rights within the association.

INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP
Open to university-affiliated scholarly publishers outside the Americas, and to presses within the Americas that publish primarily in languages other than English. The press must provide evidence demonstrating the scholarly character of its publishing program, but is not expected to meet a particular standard in terms of organization or staffing.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP
Open to presses of non-degree granting scholarly institutions and associations. The parent institutions must be not-for-profit, and the press must have an editorial board or some other acceptable practice of editorial review.

Associate members are granted voted rights within the association.

INTRODUCTORY MEMBERSHIP
Introductory members are not-for-profit scholarly publishers that intend to apply for AAUP membership in one of the other membership categories, but don’t yet meet publication or staffing requirements. Presses may not stay in the introductory membership category for more than three years.
