2008 AAUP Annual Meeting
June 26-29 | Le Centre Sheraton

The 2008 AAUP Annual Meeting was held June 26-29, in Montréal, Canada. Over 500 individuals were in attendance. A updated version of the registration list will soon be available.

Highlights
Conference Knowledge: Selected session materials and presentations can be accessed through the online program, as well as through the Annual Meeting Wiki, where we invite attendees and presenters to register and add notes and additional information to session entries. Banquet Speaker: Mark Abley, renowned Canadian poet, journalist, non-fiction writer, and editor, spoke to the 2008 AAUP gathering. His eloquent talk, speaking to the meeting theme of "Preserving the Future," is now available online.

President's Inaugural Address: Alex Holzman, director of the Temple university Press, began his term with as 2008-09 AAUP President with an address to the membership on Saturday, June 28, in Montreal.

Past-president's Address: AAUP's 2007-08 president, Sanford Thatcher, director of the Penn State University Press, delivered a farewell address to the membership on Friday, June 27.

Plenary Presentations: The two plenary discussions, which addressed variously the practices of humanities and social sciences scholarship and publication and the role new Open Access movements may have to play in such scholarly communications, were central to the meeting's themes and manyformal and informal conversations. Andrew Abbott's paper, "Publication and the Future of Knowledge," is now available via his web site. Stevan Harnad has made both his Open Access talk and information-rich slides available, as is Stanley Katz's response "Why There's no 'Free Lunch' on the Internet."
