Annual
Meeting
Offering a rich combination of educational sessions, networking
opportunities, and social and intellectual exchange, the AAUP Annual Meeting
gets consistently high marks as one of the association's most popular
programs. The conference, held every June, brings together staff of member
presses and other publishing professionals to share expertise and new
ideas, to meet with vendors, and to discuss trends in scholarly publishing.
Session topics are designed to interest staff in all areas and levels
of publishing. Panels are developed and organized by the Annual Meeting
Program Committee. Workshops on specific topics generally precede the
meeting.

Professional Development Workshops
Each year, AAUP organizes several workshops, each focusing on
a particular area, such as electronic publishing, financial management,
book design, journals marketing, Web marketing, and electronic manuscript
editing. These workshops are usually hands-on, last one or two days (often
preceding the annual meeting), and are taught by experts from the staffs
of member presses and other publishing professionals.

Regional Meetings
AAUP's regional meetings provide an opportunity for press staff
who might not be able to attend the annual meeting to meet and share information.
These meetings are made possible by the hard work of host presses and
meeting program committees. Meetings are held annually or biennially in
the Midwestern, Western, and Southern regions of the country.
Managers Meetings
Colleagues who work in the same professional areas (financial
officers, production managers, journals managers, etc.) often meet to
learn more about topics specific to their fields. Like the regional meetings,
managers meetings are generally organized and hosted by staff at member
presses.

Week-in-Residence Program
Funded by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, the Week-in-Residence program is designed to give staff at AAUP member presses the opportunity to refine or learn new skills from colleagues who are expert in a particular area. Offering an intensive, hands-on program of up to one week (although shorter visits will be allowed), the program seeks to foster a professional exchange that will contribute intellectual stimulation and problem-solving ideas to both the host and the home press. Any person who has a full-time appointment at an AAUP member press and at least two years of university press experience may apply.
Transportation and room/board for the participants in the 2010 Week-in-Residence Program will be funded by AAUP. Each participant’s home press is expected to provide salaried time off for the staff member. The host press should incur no direct costs, and will receive two free annual meeting registrations from AAUP in recognition of the effort involved in hosting a Resident for a week.
Applications for the 2011 program will be available in March.
In evaluating applications, the Professional Development Committee will consider several criteria:
- Whether the proposed program is feasible within the framework of a week in residence.
- Whether the proposed host press is particularly suitable for the applicant’s purposes.
- Whether the proposed program is easily achievable in some other way (e.g., by attending an AAUP-sponsored workshop).
- Whether the proposed program moves the applicant to a new phase in
his or her professional development.
In addition, the committee will strive for departmental and geographic diversity.
Congratulations to the following individuals who received 2010 Whiting Week in Residence Grants:
Ann Baker, EDP Manager, University of Nebraska Press
Barbara Brannon, Marketing Manager, Texas Tech University Press
Lindsay Dawson, Senior Promotions Manager, University of Nebraska Press
Kelly Chrisman Jacques, Production Assistant, University Press of Kansas
