The Art of Acquisitions

From the AAUP Acquisitions Editorial Committee

Acquisitions Hangouts

A monthly series of informal panels, hosted on the YouTube Live platform, organized by the AAUP Acquisitions Editorial Committee on topics that explore “The Art of Acquisitions.” Intended primarily for the AAUP community, the Hangouts will bring groups of acquisitions editors together to share their wit, wisdom, and hard-won experience.

Q&A with attendees will be an important part of the events—look for the chat window in the broadcast window or tweet questions with the #artofACQ tag.

Acquisitions editors are usually the first people at a press to become familiar with a project and its author(s) and know it best. How can we most effectively build on the work involved in acquiring a book to champion it to colleagues throughout the Press? What can we do to facilitate clear and effective communication presswide as each project moves from acquisitions to manuscript editorial, design and production, sales and marketing, and beyond? Panelists for this hangout are experienced publishing professionals, including an editor-in-chief, a sales & marketing manager, and a former Press director. Please join us, we look forward to your comments and questions!

Panelists:

  • Mary Elizabeth Braun, Acquisitions Editor, Oregon State
  • Allyson Carter, Senior Editor, Arizona
  • Charles Myers, Executive Editor, Chicago
  • Kristen A. Elias Rowley, Editor-in-Chief, Ohio State
  • Romi Gutierrez, Associate Director and Director of Sales & Marketing, Florida

Best Practices for Peer Review

This 2016 handbook is a resource for member publishers, acquisitions editors both new and experienced, faculty editorial boards, scholarly authors and researchers, and new scholarly publishing programs. The Best Practices handbook was developed by the Association's Acquisitions Editorial Committee through a consensus-building two-year process to articulate a set of practices that comprise a rigorous process of peer review.
