Description

Stanford University Press seeks an energetic, experienced publishing professional to acquire scholarly and professional books in business and economics. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, this individual will play a key role in the development and shaping of these lists for the Press.

Responsibilities include acquiring and developing 25 titles per year, soliciting and evaluating proposals and manuscripts, working with series editors, preparing publishing plans to present to the editorial board, negotiating contracts with authors or agents, and consulting with production and marketing. The acquisitions editor works closely with authors, as well as a shared editorial assistant, to ensure that manuscripts are of high quality, well prepared, and meet scholarly, market, and financial expectations. The acquisitions editor is expected to travel to scholarly conferences and university campuses. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Requirements:

-       Proven track record in acquiring scholarly and professional titles

-       Knowledge of academic research and publishing standards, including the peer review process

-       Knowledge of contracts and copyright

-       Excellent communication, project management, and networking skills

-       Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously

-       Proficiency with computer systems

-       Four-year college degree and at least four years experience in book publishing, including at least three in the acquisitions process

Desired qualifications:

-       Familiarity with the subject areas

-       Proven ability to develop and shape a publishing program

-       Knowledge of electronic book publishing and interest in emerging digital opportunities

-       Connections with trade agents

-       At least three years experience as an acquisitions editor

Founded in 1892, Stanford University Press publishes 140 books a year across the humanities, social sciences, law, and business. Stanford University Press is located in Redwood City, CA. If not already local to the San Francisco Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate and work in our Redwood City office.
