Assistant/Associate Editor – Mathematics/Computer Science


Princeton University Press (PUP) seeks an Assistant/Associate Editor who will focus on the Press’s lists in mathematics and computer science. This role is well suited for an individual who has specialized knowledge in mathematics, a passion for academic publications, and a professional desire to learn the editorial process and relevant skills to be a successful Editor. You will assist the Executive Editor for mathematics and computer science in the signing, developing and publishing of distinctive and outstanding books in various genres, including monographs, reference works, textbooks, and books for general readers. The Assistant/Associate Editor will serve as a liaison between authors and the Press, and support the Executive Editor through all stages of the life cycle of the book, from concept through post-publication.

Responsibilities include:

  • List Building: Build a small list of books approved by Executive Editor, and successfully execute all associated duties, including meeting annual signing and transmittal goals, negotiating contracts, presenting projects for approval.  Responsible for staying abreast of key developments and scholars in relevant fields and subfields, and identifying potential projects that would be suitable for the Press and for the Executive Editor’s editorial program.  Read appropriate literature in mathematics and computer science and research author websites to develop ideas for innovative titles. Discuss these ideas with Executive Editor and with potential authors.  Perform campus visits and attend 4-6 conferences per year to discuss existing and potential projects with authors. 
  • Author management: Guide authors through the PUP publishing process, by communicating regularly with authors about manuscript progress, necessary forms, art guidelines, and delivery dates. Research and resolve queries on permission and copyright issues.
  • List organization and ownership: Assume a leadership role in managing Executive Editor’s lists by regularly monitoring books under contract, meeting deadlines, securing peer reviews of manuscripts, organizing data for seasonal planning, and generating documents for approval of new projects. Also serve as a representative of the Executive Editor at seasonal planning, manuscript, and design meetings. Deliver manuscripts to the production department in a timely and accurate fashion.
  • Data integrity: Responsible for accurate book data throughout the life of the book.
  • Communication and Outreach: Key communicator in the organization, including liaising with in-house departments, authors, and others, such as readers and blurbers.  . Prepare summaries for book award submissions and campus travel.


  • Bachelor’s degree or substantial knowledge of mathematics is required.  An advanced degree would be an additional benefit. 
  • Publishing experience is preferred but not required.
  • A genuine interest in, and intellectual engagement with, the publication of scholarly books.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain excellent professional demeanor and be able to convey information accurately. A writing sample or proofreading test may be required at the time of interview.
  • Superior time management stills, including the ability to manage detail-oriented work and overlapping deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work independently, while also understanding and serving the greater needs of the list and the Press. 
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
  • Title and salary commensurate with experience.
